Ran Out
Periscope gallery, Tel Aviv Jaffa
Curator: Sari Faran
In order to create a series of works on the subject of localism in connection with the Canaanite conception according to which the claim of meaning to local raw materials takes place, Bauman began working with local clay originating in the central Negev (consisting of S5 clay). The fact that this local material has run out due to mining and use constitutes the essence of the exhibition that marks the point of no return of a changing reality and the depletion of natural, cultural and personal resources.
Through experiment and will Bauman creates encounters between different ceramic raw materials: on the one hand a local hard-backed local material. On the other hand, the international, fashionable and noble porcelain in the ceramic materials. In addition, Bauman uses materials such as original porcelain from the historic Naaman factory, dishes from the dining room of Kibbutz Amir, original molds from the Lapid factory and Palestinian urns. These, together with industrial and traditional working methods are used as the object of research in the laboratory for the study of the local ceramic material culture.
The various cultural, technological and formal characteristics of the raw materials used by the artist maintain the resistance, cracking and distortion of the objects. This creates a tension between the desire for the similar and the connected, and the exposure of the different and the distorted.

Untitled, the works are made of a combination of local material (S5 clay) and porcelain, combining stonework and castings. The crack is formed during drying and burning or casting due to the use of materials with different shrinkage. Height 15 - 32 cm. Photos: Ilan Amihai
